What is it?
An uninterruptible power supply is a system that is integrated into your buildings power source that detects and prevents power loss with the use of back-up batteries that provide power in place of your buildings normal power source when normal power fails.
How does it work?
An uninterruptible power supply is much like the battery in your laptop. You keep it plugged in to charge the battery from normal power. When normal power is lost or you unplug your laptop it keeps running off of your back-up battery. An uninterruptible power supply is much larger and constantly monitors your normal power source while keeping it's batteries charged. When normal power is lost, the transition from your normal power source to your UPS's battery power source is instantaneous resulting in no power loss. To keep businesses up and running for longer periods of time without power, an uninterruptible power supply will usually receive it's power from another source such as a stand-by generator until the normal building power becomes available again.
